I’m not photogenic enough for a photoshoot

Spoiler: Beauty is subjective, and what may be considered photogenic by one person may be different for another.

This has to be one of the most cited reasons I hear for not getting to have your photo taken and is not true!

Here’s the deal!

Beauty is subjective, and what may be considered photogenic by one person may be different for another…

and anyway, this concept of being photogenic was birthed out of some misconception based in fear … for sure.

Skilled and well-trained photographers work with multi-facetted individuals and bring out their unique qualities and individual beauty.

They bring out far more than their subjects features. They focus on highlighting your best attributes, capturing your personality, genuine emotions and telling your story regardless of any pre-perceived photogenic qualities.

Photography is an art form that involves a combination of technical skills, creative vision, and the ability to connect with the subject. As portrait photographers we spend years training how to see and use lighting, composition, posing and styling to capture our subjects and this in the most gorgeous ways possible. We learn and home in on skills such as understanding how various lighting techniques create certain moods, how to capture flattering angles, how to guide our subjects to feel comfortable and bring out the best of their qualities.

Really though, the purpose of a photoshoot goes beyond solely focusing on physical appearance. It’s all about capturing a moment in time, highlighting a special aspect of your life, celebrating your story.

Successful photoshoots are collaborative process between the sitter and the photographer.

Good communication, trust and a comfortable environment help the subject relax and feel more confident, which translates into incredible natural and authentic portraits, filled to the very brim with visual magic, your magic!

So, don’t let the notion of being photogenic (that is all it is a notion not a truth) stop you from having a photoshoot.

The most important thing is to find a photographer who understands your vision and can bring out the very best in you. A photographer that wants to capture beautiful and meaningful images that reflect your true self, regardless of any notions of photogenic qualities.
